Cueva Pintada: Gran Canaria Museums
Discover Gran Canaria History!

This is one of the best Gran Canaria museums. It's without any doubt a must.

And it's FREE if you go on the first weekend of each month!

Cueva Pintada or "Painted Cave" is by far the best pre-hispanic archeological sites (and archeological museum) on Gran Canaria.

It's a modern museum…with state of the art facilities…that for many years it was closed to the public. But it opened its doors in 200000000000?

As you walk through the site's original chambers and dwellings the guides…who are truly superb…give detailed explanations of what you're looking at as well as about the Guanche (original Canarians) culture and history. The guided tours are in Spanish, English, German and French.

And after watching an interesting multi-media 3D video about the Guanches, which children loved, your guide will walk you over an elevated path which takes you to the actual 'painted cave'.

This is the tour's highlight.

The colorfully decorated wall paintings are protected by a glass chamber, but by no means does this make it less impressive.

The site is located right in the centre of the city of Galdar. And its only 30 minutes drive from Las Palmas along the northern coastline.

Galdar was actually the original capital of the island as it was her where the Guanche Kings built their kigdom.

The whole visit lasts about 1.5 - 2 hours. Once you finish your visit we really recommend you stroll around this old city of Galdar and then visit Cenobio de Valeron. This is another archeological site only 10 minutes away by car in Santa Maria de Guia.
