5* Hotel Santa Catalina

Hotels in Gran Canaria Island: 5* Hotel Santa Catalina -

"A typical colonial hotel".

Location:
Hotel Santa Catalina is a good choice if you're planning to stay in the city of Las Palmas de GC.

hotel santa catalina

It's located in the city's residential area (Ciudad Jardin). Mid-way between the older historic area (Vegueta) and the town centre (Mesa y Lopez, Las Canteras, Las Arenas, etc)

The good thing about this is that it's in a very quite area. It's set back from roads. So there's practically no noise. The bad thing about its location is that there isn't too much to do around the hotel.

Las Canteras Beach                                     Vegueta

It's a 40 min walk to Las Canteras beach (a must!). And another 40 min walk to the old town in the other direction.

Realistically though, you'll be taxi-ing it a lot. Because after a whole day walking around…you probably won't have the energy to do the same thing the next day, and the day after …

Facilities:
Hotel Santa Catalina first opened its doors in 1890! And it still maintains its colonial-style ambience. People like Sir Winston Churchil or the Spanish Royal Family have stayed here.

It was fully refurbished in 1998…but that was 13 years ago. And the hotel is really starting to need another makeover…even though it's an old-fashioned hotel.

The gardens are really relaxing! However, the pool area isn't large…and it can get quite busy.

The Spa (Spa Centre Agua Vital) is quite also small. Especially for a 5*. But the staff in the Spa is outstanding, very professional.

Food:
The restaurant at the hotel is quite posh and classya la carte ! But with so many choices around why eat at the hotel?

If you like good food, check the Rias Bajas restaurant! It's not Canarian food, but Galician (from the north-west of Spain). It's very good!

Rooms:
the bedrooms are quite spacious with high (very colonial) ceilings. They're nice, but not luxurious. And they could use an upgrade too.

Lovely old-fashioned hotel! It suits better older (wiser) couples.
